Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Illumalight? We’re here to help. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our Connection & Protection Toolkits—how they work, who they’re for, and how they support your family every day.

Illumalight is a family visibility and connection system designed to help you understand your child, notice the small details, and keep essential information organized, long before a crisis ever occurs. Unlike tools that focus only on emergencies, Illumalight strengthens everyday awareness, connection, and trust while quietly preparing you for any situation.

Illumalight guides you through intentional questions and observations about your child’s world: who they are, where they go, what makes them unique, and how they express themselves. By noticing the small details, you build stronger connections, improve communication, and stay aware of patterns in everyday life — not just in emergencies. Over time, this also builds a foundation of trust, helping children and teens feel more comfortable sharing information if situations ever go off course.

Because Illumalight captures a lot of personal information, many teens and families prefer a hard copy. Having a physical toolkit allows your child to hold and manage their own information, knowing it’s secure and won’t be shared unless it’s needed in an emergency.. You can also complete the forms and scan them to store securely on your personal computer if you’d like a digital backup. Many families use a combination of both formats — keeping the information organized, private, and accessible whenever it matters most.

We currently offer 2.5 versions of the Illumalight Connect & Protect Systems:

  • Child Version – Designed for children under 13
  • Teen Version – Suitable for ages 13+
  • Teen Add-On – Grows with your child through their teen years without the need to purchase a new system

We’ll be adding additional systems in the near future, including College, Aging Adults, and more.

Yes. While Illumalight is focused on proactive awareness and everyday connection, it also keeps essential information organized and accessible in case of an emergency. You’ll have the details you need at your fingertips, so you can act quickly and confidently if needed.

Illumalight is designed with privacy in mind. Hard copy formats keep information offline and secure, so your child’s details stay private and under your control. The Toolkit includes all the information law enforcement needs to act quickly in an emergency and has been reviewed and vetted by local Police/Sheriff Departments, Private Investigators, and the FBI’s Crimes Against Children Department, Louisville Division.

Yes. If a situation arises where you need to share details with trusted adults or authorities, you can simply hand over the toolkit so they can jump right in and focus on what matters most — keeping your child or teen safe.
Illumalight has been vetted by Private Investigators, Police and Sheriff Departments, and the Crimes Against Children Division of the FBI. The information captured in the toolkit is exactly what they need, so critical time won’t be wasted on fact-finding. The system makes it easy to provide organized, accurate details quickly — while keeping the process calm and manageable.

The Child Toolkit works for children under 13. The Teen Add-On is designed to track details that become more relevant during the teen years, such as digital habits and increased independence. Using both ensures continuity and awareness as your child grows.

Illumalight is designed to encourage conversation, not interrogation. You can ask questions naturally during daily routines, share observations, and invite your child to reflect on their world. The goal is to build trust and understanding — not to monitor or control them.

Illumalight was formerly known as If I Go Missing. If I Go Missing was designed with emergency readiness in mind, focused on the critical information authorities would need if something went wrong. Illumalight represents the next evolution — shifting the focus from crisis response to everyday connection and awareness. Illumalight is a family visibility and connection system designed to help children and teens be clearly known, deeply understood, and easily identifiable long before there’s ever a crisis. It guides parents through intentional questions and observations that illuminate a child’s world - who they are, where they go, who they spend time with, how they express themselves, and what makes them uniquely them. In doing so, Illumalight strengthens trust, communication, and awareness today, while quietly organizing critical identifying information in the background. At its core, Illumalight is about visibility — not because something bad is expected, but because being seen is powerful, protective, and grounding. Illumalight is prepared, not paranoid; connected, not invasive; empowering, not fear-based.
